Flying into Nyerere: airstrips, schedules and luggage limits

What actually flies, and how often

Coastal Aviation is the carrier with a public, checkable schedule: three flights a day from Dar es Salaam into the park's airstrip network, at 08:30, 10:45 and 16:30, plus one flight a day from Zanzibar at 08:00, all read directly from the carrier's own site on 14 September 2026 against a timetable PDF the airline updated in July 2026. Coastal frames Selous and Nyerere as an inducement route, meaning a flight needs a minimum of two paying passengers to operate, which is standard practice on thinner regional routes and one reason a printed fixed fare rarely appears anywhere online.

Auric Air and Safari Air Link both publish that they fly Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar to Nyerere daily, and Auric's own Nyerere page describes multiple daily scheduled flights timed to get you to camp for the afternoon game drive. What we could not confirm is the exact departure time for a given day: Auric keeps its detailed timetable inside a downloadable rack-rate document rather than on the page itself, so treat the daily service as real and the specific slot as something to get from your camp or the airline directly, not from this page.

All three carriers run a milk-run pattern rather than a single point-to-point hop: one aircraft touches several of the park's airstrips on its way through, so your actual airtime and landing time depend on how many stops sit ahead of you on that day's rotation. Ask your camp to confirm your specific flight number and slot once it is booked, since the headline schedule times above are for the first or last leg of the route, not necessarily your own.

Times are Coastal Aviation's own published schedule, checked 14 September 2026 against a timetable the carrier updated in July 2026. Arrival times shift with the day's stop order, and light-aircraft schedules move with weather and demand, so reconfirm close to your travel date.

Which airstrip serves your camp

The park runs on a handful of registered strips, and which one you land at decides your first road transfer. Mtemere, right by the main gate, serves the eastern lake circuit: Rufiji River Camp, Selous Impala Camp and Africa Safari Selous sit minutes from it, and it also covers Lake Manze Camp and Selous Serena Camp, which list Mtemere or Siwandu depending on the day's routing. Siwandu itself serves the central lake camps proper, Siwandu and Roho ya Selous on Lake Nzerakera. Kiba and Sumbazi, in the park's quieter west, serve Kiba Point, Sand Rivers Selous and Serena Mivumo River Lodge near Stiegler's Gorge. Beho Beho keeps its own private strip for its own camp. Matambwe, in the west, is a road gate rather than a scheduled-flight strip, and it is where Sable Mountain Lodge collects guests, either by road or off the TAZARA train at Kisaki.

One detail worth knowing before you book: the small owner-run camps clustered at Mloka, just outside Mtemere gate, such as Selous River Camp and Selous Mbega Camp, also list Mtemere as their airstrip and then add a short road transfer down to the river. Flying gets you to the park; it does not always put you at your actual camp door, so check whether your transfer is a five-minute drive or a longer one before you assume the flight covers everything.

Luggage limits: pack soft, pack light

Light aircraft here fly with hard weight and volume limits, and camp welcome packs are not exaggerating when they ask for a soft bag. Coastal Aviation allows 15 kg per person on its standard fare, including hand luggage, cameras and personal items, rising to 30 kg if you book a Premium XL seat; soft duffel bags up to 40 x 40 x 80 cm are strongly recommended though not compulsory, and any excess is charged at what the airline calls the prevailing freight rate rather than a published per-kilogram figure. Auric Air sets a 20 kg total allowance on the same basis, sells excess in 10 kg blocks up to 40 kg at $60 per block on its bush and safari routes, and requires a dedicated freight seat for anything heavier than that.

The practical version: bring one soft duffel per person, leave any hard-shell suitcase at your first hotel or with your ground operator, and weigh your whole kit, camera bag included, before you leave home. If you are carrying serious photography gear, ask your camp or agent to check the freight-seat option in advance rather than discovering the limit at the airstrip check-in desk.

Fares, and what we could not confirm

None of the three carriers serving Nyerere, Coastal Aviation, Auric Air or Safari Air Link, publish a fixed one-way fare online, and we could not find one on any of their sites when checked in September 2026. Coastal's own framing of the route as an inducement service, needing two paying passengers before a flight is confirmed to operate, is one reason a printed fare rarely survives contact with a real booking: your camp or agent quotes the transfer as part of your package, or the airline quotes it once your dates and routing are fixed. Expect to pay for the segment rather than find a headline number to budget against in advance, and ask for a quote early, since seats on the smaller western strips sell out first in peak season.

The honest comparison: the short hop vs the long, hot drive

About an hour in the air stands against roughly 250 kilometres and 5 to 7 hours on the road to Mtemere gate, and the state of the unpaved final stretch is what decides which end of that range you land on. For most fly-in camps the comparison is academic: your rate is quoted airstrip to airstrip, transfers are arranged, and there is no fleet of vehicles waiting at Mtemere gate for a self-driver to switch into. Flying earns its keep hardest when you are stacking parks, since the same regional network puts you from Nyerere into Ruaha in about an hour and forty-five minutes, at which point the road never enters the plan at all.

Driving earns its keep at the other end of the market: the small camps at Mloka, just outside Mtemere gate, are the budget route into this park, and reaching them by road is what keeps that budget real. Your own vehicle then doubles as transport for the whole stay rather than a one-way airport transfer.
