Month by month
Nyerere in December
December closes the year on the warmest nights the thirty-year record shows, with the short rains now fully established and the bush green from one end of the park to the other. One camp finishes its season here too, a small but concrete marker of how far the calendar has turned since June.
If you only want the answer
December brings the warmest nights of the year, a fully green park, and one camp, Rufiji River Camp, closing out its season.
The warmest nights of the year
December's night average of 23.7°C is the highest in the thirty-year record, alongside a day high of 32.7°C and 71 mm of rain spread across 13 days on the same long-term normals. The short rains that started arriving in November are fully in place now, and the humidity that comes with them makes December feel warmer around the clock than the numbers alone suggest.
Game has scattered into the miombo the way it does every wet season, following surface water that is now everywhere rather than concentrated at the river. The boat program keeps working regardless, since the Rufiji and its lakes carry water year-round.
One camp's last month
Rufiji River Camp runs its season through December before closing for the rains, which makes this month the final chance to stay there until it reopens in June. Everywhere else that operates a dry-season-only schedule is still weeks away from closing, so the rest of the map stays largely intact through December.
TANAPA's public campsites remain bookable too, though the same wet-season caution that applies from March onward starts to apply here as well, since December's rain is enough to soften the internal roads even before the true closures begin in the new year.
Christmas week is the exception
Shoulder-season logic mostly holds in December, lower rates and lighter demand than the July to October run, with one exception: the fortnight around Christmas and New Year draws family travel regardless of season, and those specific dates book up while the rest of the month stays quiet.
The tip: if your dates are flexible, book the first three weeks of December for the shoulder-season value, and if they are not, because you need the holiday fortnight specifically, treat it like a peak-season booking rather than a green-season one.
