April averages 144 mm of rain over 18 days on the thirty-year record, the highest rainfall total anywhere on Nyerere's calendar, with days cooling to 29.4°C and nights at 22.3°C as the cloud cover holds. It also sits in the middle of the low-season conservation fee window that runs from 15 March to 15 May.
The cooling is real but modest. April is wetter than it is hot, and the discomfort here is humidity and mud rather than heat, which is exactly why the internal roads become the limiting factor rather than the temperature.
What is left running
The seasonal camps, Beho Beho, Kiba Point, Roho ya Selous, Sand Rivers Selous, Siwandu, Lake Manze, Sable Mountain, Rufiji River Camp, are all closed. What remains is the small group that advertises year-round operation, and even they hedge: Selous Impala Camp and Selous Serena Camp both specifically flag April for confirmation before you book, and Serena Mivumo River Lodge has at least one source reporting an April closure despite its own year-round claim.
TANAPA's public campsites are technically open all year, but the same fee schedule that notes the low season also warns that the roads are effectively impassable from March to May, so self-drive camping is not a realistic plan this month.

Call before you book, not after. The camps still claiming to operate in April are the ones where the fine print matters most, and a phone or email confirmation the week before travel is worth more than any listed season date.
There is no honest booking-lead-time advice for April beyond that: this is not a month where demand outruns supply, it is a month where supply itself is uncertain, so the planning problem is verification rather than competition.
