Nyerere or Udzungwa Mountains?
The two parks side by side on what you will see, what you can do, what it costs, how you get there and the health picture, with the facts behind every rating.
Our verdict
Nyerere is a vast big-game park on the Rufiji; Udzungwa is a mountain forest with no roads inside, visited on foot. Pick Nyerere for game: buffalo, hippo and giraffe guaranteed, lion likely, wild dog a good chance, boat and walking safaris at $20 each, and a flight of about an hour from Dar es Salaam. Entry is $82.60 a day plus a vehicle fee, night drives are not allowed inside the park, and most camps close from March to May. Pick Udzungwa for walking with a mandatory guide, 11 primate species and a much cheaper trip: $35.40 entry, no vehicle fee and beds in its guide from $20 to $90. It is 4 to 6 hours from Dar on tarmac, with no 4x4 needed for the journey. Our Udzungwa guide puts Nyerere on the same Kilombero corridor as an add-on, though a substantially longer haul.

4Walking is excellent: $20 for up to four hours or $25 beyond, with an armed ranger, and several camps offer fly camping. | 4Every attraction is a guided walk, from the 1 km Prince Bernhard Falls to the 6 km Sanje Waterfall and the five-day, 65 km Lumemo Trail; a TANAPA guide is mandatory and plateau routes need an armed ranger.
2bestNight drives are not permitted inside the park since the 2019 regazettement; they still run in the Selous Game Reserve blocks to the south. | 1Night walks are not offered and there are no night activities in the park.
5bestBoat safaris on the Rufiji and the lakes are the signature at $20 a person and run year-round because the water is permanent. | 1The only water activity listed is swimming in the waterfall plunge pools at Sanje and Njokamoni.
2bestAbout 250 km and 5 to 7 h from Dar es Salaam with an unpaved last stretch and a 4x4 sensible; only the TANAPA campsites are road-accessed and the lodges fly their guests in. | 1There are no roads and no game drives inside the park; your vehicle stays parked at Mang'ula headquarters.

2Malaria risk is high year-round, tsetse is real, bilharzia is plausible in the lakes and there is no clinic inside; Siwandu's North camp suits families with young children and Roho ya Selous takes children from five. | 2Dar es Salaam is 4 to 6 h on tar and Ifakara's hospital about an hour away, but malaria risk is high, the trails are steep and slick, and no lodge publishes a child policy beyond family rooms.
4bestGiraffe, hippo and buffalo are guaranteed, elephant 97 per cent and lion 90, and scheduled flights take about an hour from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. | 1A primate and bird park, not a big-game park: Udzungwa red colobus are guaranteed, while elephant, buffalo and leopard take luck and lion is absent.
3Only the northern strip of the park is open to photographic safaris, so your gate and sector decide what you see, and only the TANAPA campsites are reached by road. | 4bestNo interior road network and multi-day treks into deep wilderness on the Lumemo Trail; the Sanje route is the busy one. |

How the ratings work
- Big game is calculated from each park's sightings table on its wildlife page: guaranteed counts 3, likely 2, a fair chance 1, rare 0.5 and absent 0, across elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog, cheetah, hippo and giraffe, scaled so that 16 points is 5 out of 5. We do not rate or locate rhino anywhere in this guide network.
- Birding follows the species count on the wildlife page. Low-budget safari follows the cheapest listed bed, the share of budget places and the daily park fee.
- Walking, night drives, water, self-drive, families, first safari and wilderness are our ratings, whole numbers from 1 to 5. Press "Why?" on any row to read the facts each one rests on, with the page they come from. Where a rule is not published we say so rather than guess.
- Prices are per person per night in US dollars as listed on the lodges pages, before park fees; the three-night totals come from each park's costs page and use the dated rates there. Fees are the international adult rate per day.
