Before you go: what to pack, know and book
Almost nothing that catches people out in this park is the wildlife. It is a gate that takes no cash, a fee quoted without its VAT, a bag limit of fifteen kilos, and a ranger who has to be booked before you are allowed to walk.
If you only want the answer
Pack soft and neutral, add 18 per cent to every published fee before you budget, and book the ranger, the boat and the campsite before you travel. The gate does not take cash.
Pack for the tsetse and the luggage scale
Fifteen kilos, soft. Coastal Aviation allows 15 kg per person including hand luggage, Auric Air 20 kg, and both want soft bags that fit a light aircraft hold. That is the single hardest constraint on the trip and it is set before you leave home. The detail is on flying in.
Neutral bush colours, and nothing dark blue or black. This is not a style rule. Tsetse flies are drawn to those colours and they are a real feature of the miombo and the riverine bush here.
Settle the malaria question at a travel clinic before you fly. NaTHNaC rates all of Tanzania below 1,800 metres as high risk with no lower-risk season, and the Rufiji basin is as low and wet as it gets. Yellow fever is a separate question that turns on your routing rather than on Tanzania; both are on the health page.
Carry the insurance certificate on paper. There is no clinic inside the park, anything serious means an air evacuation, and a hotline number you cannot reach without signal is not a hotline.
Know that the published price is not the price
TANAPA publishes every fee before VAT and adds 18 per cent at the gate. That turns the $70 conservation fee into $82.60, the $40 vehicle fee into $47.20 and the $20 boat fee into $23.60. Budget the gross, not the headline.
Two figures in this park are not what most guides say. The guide and ranger fee is $40 per group per day: the tariff carves Nyerere out with its own line, double the $20 that applies in most Tanzanian parks. And the special campsite is seasonal, $60 per person in July to September against $50 the rest of the year. Both are on entry fees, and what it costs puts a whole trip together.
Know the four rules that surprise people
Four rules catch people out here, and none of them is obvious from a brochure.
Night drives ended with the 2019 regazettement and now run only in the adjoining Selous Game Reserve blocks. Most operator copy has not caught up. It is also why only 29 per cent of visitors see a leopard in a park with the highest recorded leopard density in miombo anywhere.
Swimming is out. Not the lakes, not the channels, and keep back from the water's edge while you are at it. Bilharzia is the quiet risk and the hippos and crocodiles are the loud one.
Most camps shut from March to May and come back on 1 June. TANAPA discounts the conservation fee from 15 March to 15 May, one of the few parks that does, but by then the roads and the camp list have both thinned out. See the best time to visit.
And there is no clinic inside the boundary. Kibiti and Ikwiriri on the road in have basic district facilities; the real hospitals are in Dar es Salaam.
Book it before you arrive, not at the gate
The ranger. You cannot walk or go out on a boat without one, and they are booked, not summoned. Camps do this for their own guests; if you are self-driving to a TANAPA campsite it is on you.
The special campsites. Prior booking is required, in the tariff's own words. The public campsites are first come, but see camping for what you have to bring.
The flight. Coastal frames Nyerere as an inducement route, which means a departure needs a minimum of two paying passengers. A single traveller on a quiet day is not guaranteed a seat, whatever the timetable says.
Payment at the gate. It is cashless: GePG or mobile money, prepared before you get there. This is the single most common source of a surprise at Mtemere.
